Fiesta Promotional Green Casserole

I received this email last week “I have a promotional casserole in green with a green lid. I wanted to put it up for auction but can’t find a price for it anywhere. I have found casseroles in the other colors but none with a green lid. Is it rare to have a green lid? Thank you for your time”

I looked up some information and found some interesting fiestaware history.

There were promotional casserole and pie plates made by Homer Laughlin in the five colors that match the HLC colored glazes – yellow, light green, mauve blue, red, and turquiose. The interesting part is that HLC denied making these items for several years. A few years ago a set was found in an original unopened box which was stamped “Fiesta”. No examples of these have ever been found with the Fiesta stamp on the bottom. It is believed that the casserole in question is the one that was offer in the 1939-1942 promotional campaign. The set of two pieces sold for $1.00. The casserole is 3″ deep and 8″ in diameter.

Next post we will talk about the French Casserole from the same time period, and the regular casserole produced first in 1936.

The green casserole dish pictured was on Ebay for over $500.  There were several listed for between $125 (small nick on handle) and this one for over $530 and several in between.  There were a couple of different styles and I could not find a promotional one for sale at the time of this re-posting.  Like always, do your homework and look over the pieces carefully.  Almost 100% of the time the piece you buy will not be returnable.
