Cleaning Gray Marks from Fiestaware

Black Marks On Fiesta

If you own Fiestaware, you may have noticed strange, gray markings on your plates. You may have even mistaken these gray streaks on your Fiesta dinnerware for scratches. Or maybe these gray marks on your Fiestaware are imperfections in the glaze? Relax. It”s neither/nor. Gray marks on Fiestaware are completely normal, especially on lighter glazed colors. Gray marks on Fiestaware are not imperfections or scratches. Rather, these gray “scratches” are caused by metal flatware scraping against the glaze. “Wait, that sounds like a scratch to me!” you might say, but they really aren’t. They are microscopic divots – more like indentations – on the glaze and the only reason you can see them is because mineral buildup or dust has been building up in those microscopic nooks and crannies. The glaze will still be smooth to the touch and when you clean it up, you won”t even know it was there. To clean it up, Homer Laughlin recommends using Zud or Bar Keeper’s Friend. You can also use a homemade scouring powder made from water and baking soda. Just mix it up until its the consistency of frosting and scrub, scrub, scrub. Some Fiestaware owners also report that Wrights Copper Cleaner works well. So, don”t worry if you see gray marks or tiny little “scratches” all over your Fiestaware – it”s not ruined! All you need to do is give it a little love and polish and your Fiestaware will look as good as new. Gray marks be gone! (P.S. My fiesta has silverware markings on it could it be from my silverware that is 50+ yrs old. We got it as wedding gift. Should I replace with new and if so what kind would not leave marks? Thanks so much – this has been really bugging me forever!

I have tried the Bar Keepers helper and Bon Ami previously but the Kooper Kleaner worked quickly and well. Thanks so much for the advice.
